Earlier today, commuters in downtown Boston's Financial District found themselves confronted with a traffic standstill as climate change activists from the local Extinction Rebellion (XR Boston) took to the streets. More than 35 activists disrupted the morning rush, creating a gridlock near the bustling South Station, with the Boston Police Department confirming several arrests in connection with the protest.
The XR Boston is urging Governor Maura Healey to back a policy that opposes new fossil fuel infrastructure in Massachusetts and to work with state legislators in introducing a permanent ban. XR Boston organizer Alex Chambers reminds us of the axiom in dealing with environmental crises, as noted by Boston.com: "When you find yourself stuck in a hole, the first step is to stop digging."
Although such disruptive acts may not sit well with affected commuters, XR Boston believes in the power of provocative protest. To those impacted by the demonstration, the organization offered an apology and explanation in an open letter, stating, "We gave you a bad morning. We made you late to work, or to a dentist appointment, or to an interview...We all had a difficult day today, because we think it will make a better tomorrow."
Amidst the chaotic scene in downtown Boston, NBC Boston highlighted that the Boston Police Department urged drivers to seek alternate routes, while The Boston Globe reported that the demonstration led to backups along Summer Street and several surrounding roads.
