According to the Auto Club's Weekend Gas Watch, Labor Day weekend travelers will be paying the highest prices ever for the holiday getaway. Pump prices are now at least ten cents higher than last year in most Southern California areas, with the average price for self-serve regular gasoline standing at $5.30 per gallon – four cents higher than just a week ago. The national average price, on the other hand, is $3.83 per gallon – one cent lower than last week, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California report.
Los Angeles wholesale gas prices remain at their highest levels since November 2022, according to Auto Club spokesperson Doug Shupe, as mentioned in the Fox5 San Diego news report. Shupe said that AAA Travel bookings have increased by 4%, and international bookings have risen by an impressive 44% compared to last year's holiday weekend, indicating that people are still eager to hit the road.
As millions of people plan their final summer excursions, the Auto Club offers several tips for saving money on gas. These include ensuring your tires are inflated to the correct level, maintaining your car according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, and abiding by the speed limit. However, to save on cost during their journeys, travelers are urged to avoid cruise control on slippery roads—as they risk losing control of their vehicles.
Other recommendations for cost-saving include minimizing the use of air conditioning, avoiding extended idling to warm up the engine, and reducing the use of roof racks.
