Witnesses describe the horrifying moment when the boy cried out for help, compelling his father to plunge into the water in a desperate attempt to rescue him, according to Boston25 News. The situation escalated as both got trapped in the tumultuous current, summoning help from several Good Samaritans and ultimately leading to the father's critical condition at a local hospital.
A bystander, Robin DiNatale, recounted the events, stating that two men from the beach leaped into the water without hesitation, eventually managing to bring the young boy to the shore, as reported by Yahoo! News. The father, however, remained 100 yards out, struggling against the powerful current. The Salisbury Police and Fire departments arrived on the scene promptly with an officer and the fire chief himself diving into the waters to bring the exhausted man back to shore,. The man, who had been out in the ocean for an estimated 20 minutes, required emergency life-saving measures and was transported to a local hospital in an unknown condition.
The incident at Salisbury Beach magnified the absence of lifeguards in the area during this time of year - a fact the lifeguards themselves acknowledge concerning the worst rip current section. Though most of those involved in this rescue were fortunate enough to make it back to safety, one of the Good Samaritans, a 34-year-old man named Kenny Crosby of Miami, faced his own ordeal as he became exhausted after saving the child, as reported by 7News Boston.
