The North Park-based school, teaching around 265 students, is one of only two schools in San Diego County and 33 Californian schools attaining this outstandingly commendable distinction. According to the San Diego Unified School District, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program, established in 1982, shines a spotlight on exemplary public and private elementary, middle, and high schools, illustrating their exceptional performance and significant progress in closing achievement gaps among various student subgroups.
As reported earlier this week, the recognition is attributed to the schools' performance on all student scores, subgroup student scores, and graduation rates. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond congratulated these academic powerhouses, emphasizing that their "commitment to fostering an inclusive and exceptional learning environment exemplifies the true essence of education." Indeed, this unique accomplishment is an inspiration to educational institutions nationwide.
Public schools are nominated for the esteemed title by top education officials in each state, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and the Bureau of Indian Education, whereas private schools are nominated by the Council for American Private Education. Such a distinction is undoubtedly a testament to the schools' dedication to academic excellence and consistent support of all students. The Casita Center for Technology, Science, and Math in Vista Unified School District is the only other school in San Diego County to be bestowed with this honor.
