On September 23rd, residents of Hayward should expect a DUI checkpoint, scheduled to occur between 7:00 PM and 2:00 AM at an undisclosed location. Organized by the Hayward Police Department, this initiative aims to ensure public safety by promptly identifying and apprehending impaired drivers according to Hayward Police Department announcement.
DUI checkpoints are strategically placed in areas known for high incidents of impaired driving-related crashes and arrests. Lieutenant Garett Wagner, a spokesperson for the police department, emphasizes the significance of preventive measures against impaired drivers, stating that they "pose a significant risk" to others on the road.
During this checkpoint, officers will be vigilant for any indication of drivers operating under the influence of alcohol, drugs – including prescription medications and over-the-counter substances – and marijuana, which remains illegal to consume while driving despite its legal status for medicinal and recreational use.
First-time offenders charged with a DUI will face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license. This sobering reality reflects the gravity of the situation and serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of driving while impaired.
The Hayward Police Department is able to conduct this operation thanks to funding provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
