The Hayward Police Department in California is stepping up its efforts to promote public safety. On September 23rd, the department will be conducting a driving under the influence (DUI) checkpoint from 7:00 PM to 2:00 AM at an undisclosed location, according to a release from Hayward PD.

The specific location of the DUI checkpoint has been chosen based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes and arrests in the area. Lt. Garett Wagner, a representative of the Hayward Police Department, stated that "impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk.

Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety," he added.

The consequences of a DUI conviction can be severe. First-time offenders can expect an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, according to the same source.

For the Hayward Police Department's DUI checkpoint, funding has been provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, which in turn is supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, per the announcement.
