A somber crowd gathered on Wednesday outside Chicago's Gold Star Families Memorial to honor the life of fallen Chicago police officer Areanah Preston. NBC Chicago reporterd that her name, the 600th addition to the memorial wall, is now eternally etched alongside those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the city's safety. Preston's life was tragically taken in a brazen attack near her Avalon Park home on May 6th, just after completing her shift.

During the emotional tribute, Sandra Wortham, the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation President and sibling to an officer killed in the line of duty, expressed, "The wall bears an immeasurable amount of love. Every name there is a family, a community, a district, a partner." The Foundation, which provides assistance for the 56 children of fallen and catastrophically wounded officers, offers financial aid for educational costs.

The vigil proceeded with words of encouragement from Gold Star families, Mayor Brandon Johnson, and interim CPD Supt. Fred Waller, reminding them of the city's support, as stated by Mayor Johnson, "In the face of opposition, know the city of Chicago supports you."

Officers investigating Preston's case have charged four teenagers, including a 16-year-old who was charged as an adult, with first-degree murder, multiple counts of armed robbery, arson, burglary, possession of a stolen vehicle, and unlawful use of a weapon, as ABC7 Chicago reported. It is believed that the suspects had been on a crime spree prior to the murder of Officer Preston.

Despite the devastating loss of her daughter, Dionne Mhoon, Preston's mother, is determined to pray for the families of the accused and find answers amidst her heartbreak, expressing her sorrow that her daughter's memory now endures through such a senseless act, "What kind of human would say that about another human being?"

Officer Areanah Preston leaves a legacy of service, dedication, and compassion. Days away from completing her Master's degree at Loyola University, her dedication extended beyond her devotion to the badge. Chicago now mourns the loss of a treasured hero, pledging to maintain their support for those who bravely continue to protect and serve.
