In a tragic incident in Berkeley Hills, a 36-year-old Oakland man, Jonah Jeremiah Roper, stands accused of killing his mother and attempting to murder two others.
According to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, Roper has been charged with murder and eight other felony counts, including attempted murder, first-degree residential burglary, second-degree commercial burglary, evading an officer, and receiving stolen property. If convicted on all charges, he could face 44 years to life in prison.
Evidence gathered by the Oakland Police Department reveals a chilling series of events that unfolded on September 23. Jonah Roper allegedly stabbed his mother multiple times at her home on Overlook Drive in Berkeley.
When her fiancée attempted to intervene, Roper attacked him with the knife as well. The injured fiancée sought refuge at a neighbor's house, where a resident helped hide him. Roper, however, managed to force entry into the neighbor's home, stabbed the woman who had shielded the fiancée, and stole car keys to make a hasty getaway.
He then led police on a high-speed chase before ultimately getting arrested.
