Police from multiple departments banded together to put an end to the dangerous and illegal operation of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and dirt bikes on public streets in Lawrence, Massachusetts. The operation, which took place yesterday, yielded seven arrests, almost 20 seized vehicles, and several criminal summons and citation.

Reports of reckless dirt bike and ATV operation in Lawrence have escalated in recent years, with public complaints on the rise. In response, the joint operation, involving Lawrence Police, the Massachusetts State Police (MSP), Methuen Police, Andover Police, North Andover Police, Massachusetts Environmental Police, and the Essex County Sheriff’s Department, aimed its sights on those who jeopardize public safety by trespassing on public roads with their off-road vehicles, acts that constitute a violation of Massachusetts General Law Chapter 90B, Section 25, as stated by MSP News.

An aerial advantage that was integral to the success of the operation. With the assistance of Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) and color cameras from MSP helicopter Air 2, aerial units were able to effectively relay location updates to ground units that tracked these recklessly driving dirt bikes and ATVs throughout the city, often at high speeds and without any respect for traffic laws, according to the Massachusetts Police Department.

Moreover, the invaluable mapping system implemented by the MSP flight crew provided the critical information needed to locate operators attempting to evade capture, whether by concealing their vehicles off the road or by abandoning them altogether and fleeing on foot, as reported by MSP News. Ultimately, this collaborative effort resulted in the seizure of a total of 18 off-road vehicles, the arrests of seven suspects, and the issuance of 10 criminal summons and 50 citations—a significant blow to those perpetuating the menace on the streets of Lawrence.
