Earlier this week, Springfield Police officers seized an illegal large-capacity firearm from a suspect with two prior firearm convictions, despite legislation and multiple convictions. 36-year-old Jonathan Mitchell of Springfield, Massachusetts was arrested after officers from the Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) detected a drug transaction in a parking lot on the 500 block of Parker Street.

According to the Springfield Police Department, Mitchell's arrest followed the apprehension of the other individual involved in the drug deal, Lisa Boyle, who was found to be in possession of crack-cocaine.

Mitchell was stopped and detained as he parked at a gas station on the 500 block of Wilbraham Road. Officers found a firearm in Mitchell's shoulder pack, loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition and capable of holding 18 rounds.

Detectives also recovered approximately 4.6 grams of crack-cocaine and more than $1,800 in cash.

This is not the first time Mitchell has found himself on the wrong side of the law. Mitchell has twice been convicted for possession of a firearm and cocaine distribution. In a 2017 case, Mitchell was eventually acquitted of attempted murder, according to MassLive.
