A collective $89,017 in unclaimed monies surfaced in the County of Santa Clara as of today and the Department of Tax and Collections (DTAC) has published a list of 127 individuals and businesses whose oversight or lack of awareness had resulted in this sum lying dormant in the County's General Collections Trust Funds. According to the County of Santa Clara, with the deadline for filing claims on November 11, the department is diligently striving to locate these potential owners who may have slipped through the cracks of bureaucracy.
A central collection agency, DTAC collects a spectrum of funds—ranging from public assistance overpayments to fines and penalty assessment, for the County of Santa Clara and the Superior Court of California. It isn't uncommon for people to overpay or duplicate their payments by mistake. However, the unclaimed amount also encompasses funds that were designated for crime victims, who were either unable to be located, declined to accept the compensation, or simply went out of business. In such circumstances, it is the mandate of the department to ensure that these funds are duly allocated and find their way to their rightful owners.
Sylvia Jefferson, the director of the Department of Tax and Collections, emphasizes that "DTAC is committed to issuing the funds to owners of the unclaimed money.” The complexity of reclaiming these monies is evident, as the department has tried to notify payees in the past, though without success. Letters were returned, checks left uncashed, or payees flat-out refused the funds. This cycle exemplifies how bureaucracy can create distance between an institution and the individuals it aims to serve.
Despite these roadblocks, the County has continued to work toward redistributing the unclaimed sum. An online search from the Department of Tax and Collections has been established in accordance with Government Code Section 50050, allowing those curious about potential unclaimed funds to explore their eligibility. The website also provides access to claim forms, granting users the ability to quickly begin the process of laying claim to their funds.
As the November 11 deadline approaches, unclaimed monies left in the General Collections Trust Funds will be transferred to the county funds after this date. To prevent the possibility of misdirected funds, the department strongly urges individuals and businesses listed as potential owners to submit their claims before the deadline.
