The remains of a 27-year-old Pleasanton woman were discovered near the Alameda shoreline. Rachel Elizabeth Imani Buckner was confirmed as the victim after a detailed investigation of the horrific incident by the Alameda Police Department (APD) and their respective law enforcement partners. A suspect has been arrested in connection with Rachel's death, marking a significant step towards resolution in the case.

On July 20, 2023, as reported earlier by the Alameda Police Department, human remains were found inside a bag near the Bay Farm Island Bridge. The location in Alameda, CA instigated not only a prompt response from local law enforcement, but also the involvement of the Alameda County Sheriff's Office Coroner's Bureau. The preliminary autopsy revealed that Rachel's tragic death was no accident but rather a homicide.

An extensive investigation to quickly identify the victim was set into motion by APD, turning to the Missing and Unidentified Persons (MUPS) Database to work tirelessly in search of an identity for the deceased. Finally, on August 30, DNA evidence successfully identified the victim as Rachel Elizabeth Imani Buckner, bringing about some closure for her family.

As the investigation continued, the APD were able to build a solid case, backed by evidence, against a 42-year-old Pleasanton man. With support from the United States Marshals Service, and backed by the Alameda Police Department and the Pleasanton Police Department, the suspect was arrested yesterday.

Throughout the course of the investigation, numerous law enforcement partners have provided support and resources, including the Alameda County Search and Rescue Team, Alameda County Crime Lab, and Contra Costa County Crime Lab, enabling progress and ultimately leading to the arrest of the primary suspect.

Recognizing the importance of sensitivity and privacy in such tragic circumstances, the Alameda Police Department continues to remain in contact with the Buckner family, ensuring their well-being during this unspeakably difficult time. As the investigation enters its next phase, the Police Department has appealed to the community for respect and understanding.

As the inquiry into Rachel's death presses on, with support from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the public has been encouraged to provide any information that may be beneficial to the case. Anyone privy to any such information has been urged to contact the Alameda Police Department at (510) 337-8402.
