In a spirited display of camaraderie and cooperation, the Boston Police Department (BPD) and Boston Public Schools (BPS) recently faced off in their first annual dodgeball competition, dubbed Dodge Bowl. The friendly tournament, held at New Mission High School in Hyde Park, aimed to strengthen the partnership between law enforcement and education, with a focus on creating a safe and supportive environment for students.

The inaugural event brought together top officials like Police Commissioner Michael Cox and BPS Superintendent Mary Skipper, as well as BPD's School Engagement Unit and BPS Safety Services members. The joyous gathering signified a much-needed celebratory break amidst the demanding responsibility of ensuring public safety, especially for the youth.

Speaking at the event, Boston Public Schools Engagement Unit Commander Juana Hernandez told WHDH the importance of connecting with one's inner child, "Although we're adults, inside there's always that inner child, and what better way than to just let it go, relax, and just be ready for the school year."

Superintendent Mary Skipper echoed these sentiments in a statement to WHDH, saying, "This is, to me, a good celebration of fun and joy, of coming together." Similarly, Police Commissioner Michael Cox added, "Sometimes, we forget that life is also about enjoying each other's company and having fun. All our jobs are hard. But to come together and laugh and joke — I think it's really good."

As the new school year looms ahead, the dodgeball event symbolically reinforces the commitment to safety in Boston's educational institutions. According to WHDH News, officials from both BPD and BPS anticipate organizing more events like the Dodge Bowl to foster stronger relationships and engage in community-building activities.
