As reported by KTVU, Oakland has seen an alarming increase in crime rates, particularly in robberies and carjackings. Violent crime has risen by 12% since last year, with robberies surging by 30%. The ongoing chaos has even left local politicians like District 6 Oakland Councilmember Kevin Jenkins, concerned. In a statement to KTVU, he voiced his frustrations: "I'm fed up with the chaos that's taken place in our community. Every day I get calls from neighbors about the out-of-control crime. It's imperative that we hold those in violation accountable."
Last Tuesday, a harrowing account of a couple who struggled to protect their small business in the Fruitvale district from armed robbers. After making a cash withdrawal from a bank, the victims, who own a Boost Mobile store that provides check cashing and money transfer services, were given a fender by suspects bender and eventually followed back to their store. A tense confrontation ensued, during which their 9-year-old son was present, and the robbers made off with a bag containing $50,000 in cash.
