Earlier this month, residents of New Bedford's south-end neighborhood were shaken by a shooting, which transpired near the Ben Rose housing development. New Bedford Major Crime Detectives promptly took action, resulting in the arrest of 20-year-old Jonathan Ovalle in connection to the incident, as reported in a Facebook post by the New Bedford Police Department.
Ovalle, a resident of Division Street, allegedly fired two rounds from a handgun at a passing vehicle, leading to property damage and heightening fear in the local community. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the vehicle occupants.
The investigation was led by Detective Roberto DaCunha, whose diligence in the case ultimately resulted in the apprehension of the suspect near his residence earlier this week.
According to the New Bedford Police Department, Ovalle has been charged with multiple firearm-related offenses, including discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, destruction of property, and assault by means of a firearm. He is currently being held without bail at the Dartmouth House of Correction, pending further developments in the case.
