Yesterday, 12-year-old Damien Green was fatally caught up in a gunfire exchange while walking home from playing basketball in the 6700 Block of South Lowe Avenue, Englewood neighborhood of Chicago. As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, Damien is one of seven children 13 or younger to tragically lose their lives to homicide in Chicago this year.
The tragic incident remains unsolved so far, with a reward of $15,000 being offered for any information that could lead to an arrest, according to ABC7 Chicago.
The incident has prompted police, elected officials, and community leaders to try to collaborate in order to prevent similar tragedies and establish a safer environment for the youth and population of Chicago.
Deputy Police Chief Gilberto Calderon and Ald. William Hall (6th) have called for the community's active participation in attempting to solve this case and steer society towards preventing such tragic incidents. Calderon highlighted the crucial role the community plays in these situations, stating, "It’s up to the community to come with us to solve this tragedy."
