A small, close-knit community in Woodhull, Illinois has been swept by a sense of anticipation with the local sale of a whopping $3 million Instant lotto ticket. The fortunate "200X Payout" Instant lottery ticket was sold at a local BP gas station, according to a NBC Chicago report.
Jennifer Damer, manager of said BP store, voiced her surprise in a statement, saying, "It’s quite surprising that our BP station sold a ticket that won a grand prize." The station is a regular stop for residents including nearby farmers and hailing is the occasional truck driver as quoted by Fox 32 Chicago.
With a modest population of 811, says the 2010 U.S. Census, Woodhull residents are buzzing with curiosity over the winner's identity. Damer revealed that "there's been much talk about the $3 million winning lottery ticket," and the town is abuzz with speculations of the lucky individual's identity.
A one percent bonus of $30,000 — a direct result of selling the winning ticket — will come to the gas station. BP owner Phillip Edat plans to partially use this bonus for store improvements and distribute the rest among his seven loyal employees, illustrating the inherent camaraderie within this tiny town.
In 2021, over 50 million winning Instant Lotto tickets were sold across Illinois, alongside several hefty prizes in other Chicago suburbs. An earlier NBC 5 Investigates report suggested that the Illinois Lottery continued to sell many Instant Games even after the top prizes were claimed. A lottery spokesperson had commented on the time-consuming procedure of notifying retailers and removing specific games, which "can take to up to 3 months to complete" as noted by NBC Chicago.
