Officer Heather Alvarado was among the sheriff's police who responded to the scene, according to the Cook County Sheriff's Office. Alvarado used two tourniquets to control one victim's heavy bleeding, per the same account, a move credited with keeping the injured man alive long enough to reach a hospital. Both men who were shot survived, the sheriff's office said, and the investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
