A 28-year-old man from Ford Heights is now facing serious charges after an incident involving a traffic stop and a subsequent chase, as reported by both FOX 32 Chicago and the Country Herald. Authorities charged Trevon Walker with aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, a felony, and a misdemeanor count of resisting or obstructing a peace officer, stemming from a traffic stop on Nov. 2.
According to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, deputies observed a tan Ford committing a traffic violation, disregarding a stop sign at Kennedy and Diplomat lanes in Ford Heights. During the attempted stop by deputies, the vehicle slowed, only to speed away and finally halt a second time. Walker, driving from the vehicle, frantically holding his waistband, was chased by officers before being apprehended in a nearby field.
When law enforcement retraced the chase route, they discovered a loaded firearm that had been previously reported as stolen in Georgia. After his rights were read, "Walker reportedly told investigators the gun belonged to him," per a statement obtained by FOX 32 Chicago. However, officials confirmed that he did not possess a Firearms Owner’s Identification (FOID) card or a concealed carry license, which is required by Illinois law.
Walker made an appearance at the Markham Courthouse on Nov. 3, following his arrest, where he was ordered held in custody at the Cook County Jail. The Country Herald notes that while these charges are severe, "all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law." Despite the gravity of the accusations, Walker's trial awaits, where the evidence will face the scrutiny of the judicial process.
