Chicago's Cook County Court has sentenced Latrell Allen, aged 24, to a 60-year prison term under charges of attempted murder of police officers.
On an otherwise ordinary day in 2020, a 911 call placed by a concerned passerby reported a man with a gun near Chicago's Moran Park. Officers arrived quickly, identifying Allen from the description provided by the caller. In the events that followed, Allen tried escaping the scene, consequently leading to a chase. According to an official statement by Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, Allen fired a total of eight shots towards the officers in an alleyway.
Allen was later found guilty for two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer and two counts of the aggravated discharge of a firearm in the direction of a peace officer. Representing the prosecution were Bureau Chief Steve Nate, Supervising Attorney Dan Weiler, and Assistant Attorney General Peter Ravoori, of the Attorney General's Criminal Trials and Prosecutions Bureau.
In emphasizing a staunch stance on violence, Attorney General Raoul welcomed the sentence and reiterated the importance of holding offenders accountable to ensure the safety of law enforcement officers. He commits to combating and reducing gun violence throughout Illinois.
