
On September 9, an event took place in Carlsbad, California involving a 16-year-old male and local police officers. The incident can be viewed in the released Carlsbad Police Critical Incident Video (09-09-23).
Police attended a scene near Carlsbad Boulevard and Palomar Airport Road, noticing alcohol inside a parked white truck. The occupants of the truck were ordered to exit. The video shows a 16-year-old male, who was seated in the front passenger seat, exiting the vehicle prematurely and reaching under his seat. Despite orders from officers, a firearm was retrieved and aimed at an officer. In response, an officer shot a single round, hitting the teenager in the arm. Injured, the young man ran to the ocean and jumped off a cliff before being captured and given immediate medical help. He was then taken to a local hospital where he survived his injuries.
Both the San Diego Police Department and Carlsbad Police have launched investigations following this incident. According to a Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the officer-involved shooting is being examined by the San Diego Police Department, while the administrative aspects of the case and policy adherence are being examined by the Carlsbad Police.
