The Chicago Police Department has recently issued a community alert concerning increasing theft related to online transactions in the Grand Crossing District throughout October. A recurring pattern involves victims setting item purchase arrangements via Facebook Marketplace, and subsequently being met with aggression and theft at the agreed location.
The alert describes the culprits as a group of 3-5 unknown individuals armed with handguns, including a female member, and a male appearing to be within the ages of 13-15. They use a range of weaponry, from their own hands and feet to visible firearms. The 7200 block of South Langley Ave is a common location for these incidents, with reports filed on October 12th, 13th, 15th, and 16th.
While digital platforms like Facebook Marketplace provide an unmatched convenience in buying and selling goods, they have also spawned a new class of crimes. Across the nation, individuals have been becoming victims of theft and more aggressive crimes resulting from meet-ups organized for online transactions.
