In a unique promotional event, the Claddagh Ring Pub, a bar located on Chicago's North Side, had to honor a pricey bet after promising patrons free drinks if the Chicago Bears lost their match against the Denver Broncos. Although the Bears held a 21-point lead at one stage, their eventual loss resulted in the bar covering customers' tabs. The establishment's owner, Kris Jackson, estimates the cost at approximately $5,000, as reported by NBC Chicago.
In Lincoln Square neighborhood, where is located the Claddagh Ring Pub, the promotion was aimed at drawing people indoors on a pleasant day while providing a consolation in the event of the Bears' defeat. The ebb and flow of the game, however, influenced attendees' drinking patterns in ways Jackson did not foresee. He explained to NBC Chicago that the early lead secured by the Bears "tamed the crowd's drinking for sure," offering an unexpected benefit for the enterprise.
According to the promotion's details, tabs would cease to accrue after the end of the third quarter. For most of the game, while the Bears held their lead, customers appeared to indulge in the possibility of complimentary drinks. However, with the reversal of the team's fortunes, fans found themselves cheering less for their team and more for the free beer. As noted by ABC 7, this victory for the Broncos resulted in the Bears' fourteenth consecutive defeat, dating back to the prior season.
Emotions were understandably mixed among the bar's patrons. Speaking to NBC Chicago, customer Hilda Chan said, "I saved like 40 bucks at least, but I really wanted the Bears to win." Meanwhile, another patron, Andres Castro, described the atmosphere as "Emotions are everywhere – it was so close. A lot of fun though, definitely wanted a win but we got free drinks."
Despite the financial setback of approximately $5,000, Jackson's promotional strategy generated the desired effect – drawing attention to the bar and creating an enjoyable environment for local residents. As Jackson stated, "Small bar, small local neighborhood, but we’re really getting a lot of good press so I really do appreciate it." This once-off promotion has undoubtedly left a lasting impression on customers, many of whom will recall where they were when the Bears lost again, but they managed to secure free drinks in the process.
