Following multiple incidents of aggravated vehicular hijackings, armed robberies, and strong arm robberies, Chicago's 11th (Harrison), 15th (Austin), and 25th (Grand Central) districts have been placed on high alert. The aggressors are reported to be young men aged 15 to 19, dressed in all-black and wearing ski masks, targeting victims indiscriminately according to the Chicago Police Department community alert.
Seven incidents were reported yesterday, October 17, within 24 hours across the affected districts. The victims were threatened and robbed at gunpoint, knifepoint, or battered without any weapons and their vehicle and/or personal property taken. Both the community and law enforcement have raised concerns about this recent trend of violence.
In light of the recent increase in crime, the public are urged to remain vigilant. The police have provided safety tips emphasising situational awareness especially when entering or exiting vehicles. The alert also suggests not to resist during a robbery or attempt to chase the assailant.
Citizens' memory of unique physical characteristics of the offender, such as scars, limps, acne, teeth, and tattoos, would aid in the police investigation. Promptly dialing 9-1-1 and remaining at the scene, when possible is also crucial. If you witnesses an incident, you are also encouraged to be provide contact information to the victim and/or police.
