In Chicago's Englewood district, a surge in motor vehicle thefts has emerged. The Chicago Police Department (CPD) Community Alert reported multiple incidents this month. This rise in crime has necessitated cooperation between local residents and law enforcement to tackle the ongoing thefts.
The incidents have shaken the community, with victims usually discovering their cars damaged or gone within the day. The thefts are scattered throughout the 7th District, which encompasses the Englewood area. While 7th district manages motor vehicle crimes, the local authority aims also to protect their property.
The CPD, as yet unaware of the perpetrators, has offered safety suggestions to residents. These include staying aware of unusual individuals and never leaving car keys in the vehicle. They also encourage immediate reporting of any suspicious occurrences, providing detailed descriptions of potential culprits and vehicles.
In an attempt to reduce crime, the CPD is offering to distribute anti-theft steering wheel locks to owners of Kia and Hyundai cars. The locks can be collected from local CAPS offices. For additional safety measures, residents across all of Chicago's 22 police districts can have traceable markings etched into their catalytic converters.
A reimbursable GPS tracking device program for vehicles has also been rolled out by the City. By signing up with the City, citizens can get their tracking device costs refunded, thus advocating the widespread use of such theft-prevention technology.
