Sheriff Thomas Dart of Cook County is intensifying efforts to combat human trafficking and prostitution by focusing on illicit websites that facilitate these activities. Over the past fortnight, his department has arrested eight individuals on related charges and assisted ten women seeking help reports the Chicago Sun-Times. Dart expressed concern over the enormity of the challenge, citing that only a fraction of the 30 million tips received this year by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children have led to arrests.
"It's not feasible to arrest our way out of this problem," Dart said, pointing out the logistical constraints of his department. He recognized that the internet, while being a tool for many, has similarly enabled criminals. Consequently, the department has refocused its efforts. To work with online platforms, they adopt strategies to slow and eliminate human trafficking and prostitution, as mentioned in the Chicago Sun-Times.
A recent undercover operation in Cook County led to an unprecedented number of arrests related to human trafficking, including charges such as operating a brothel and involuntary servitude. Dart suggested that with more personnel, his office could accelerate this momentum, "Given more resources, we could make thousands of more arrests," he said at a recent press conference as per NBC Chicago.
Most of those nabbed in the sting operation were promoting prostitution on websites like ListCrawler and MegaPersonals. Sheriff Dart announced plans to collaborate with these platforms to thwart future trafficking incidents, according to NBC Chicago.
