The Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV) has released an annual Domestic Violence Homicide Report documenting the prevalent issue of domestic violence fatalities in the state. A total of 57 lives were lost in 45 separate occurrences in 2022, indicating the severe nature of this problem.
The recent slight decline in numbers due to the pandemic's easing does not dismiss the gravity of the current situation. ICADV's President and CEO, Vickie Smith, explains that such incidents are wholly preventable and the depth of the loss is intolerable. Noteworthy is the fact that a third of the victims were 17 years old or younger, showing the impact on society's most vulnerable. The most common cause of death was firearms, reports WAND.
Directing to focus quite on prevention efforts is the primary approach of ICADV for addressing any further incidents and deaths caused by domestic violence. They endorse local domestic violence agencies dedicated to tackling this issue at the community level. Acknowledging the need for informed intervention, Illinois has set a Domestic Violence Fatality Review Committee to study and decide necessary measures for reducing domestic violence deaths. Creating local judicial circuit teams plays another pivotal role in mitigating this issue by reviewing homicide cases and giving recommendations for modifications at state and local levels.
