A 50-year-old woman was shot and killed while driving through Back of the Yards early Friday, striking a parked SUV after gunfire tore through her vehicle on South Wood Street. Chicago police say the woman was driving a silver SUV south on Wood Street around 12:17 a.m. when she was struck by multiple gunshots in the 4500 block, just south of 45th Street.
According to ABC7 Chicago, the woman crashed into a parked SUV after being struck. She was transported to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Area One detectives are investigating the shooting, which Chicago police reported early Friday.
A Block With a Violent History
This is not the first time gunfire has targeted a driver on this exact stretch of Wood Street. In November 2024, a 30-year-old woman was shot in the hand while driving through the same 4500 block after one of four unknown males on the sidewalk fired at her vehicle, according to CBS News. More recently, the cited CBS report contains no March incident involving a 42-year-old man in the same block.

A Neighborhood Already Grieving
Friday's shooting echoes a string of recent vehicular attacks in the neighborhood. In a case Hoodline covered in May, 26-year-old mother Krystal Cruz was shot and killed while driving through Back of the Yards before crashing into a parked car on South Hermitage Avenue. In June, a late-night mass shooting left two dead and five wounded in the 5100 block of South Wood Street, and in August, a man was found shot dead in the 4500 block of South Honore Street, just one block west of Wood.

Open Questions and a Push for Change
It remains unclear whether the woman was specifically targeted or caught in crossfire, and whether suspect descriptions or license-plate reader footage from nearby intersections will yield leads for detectives. Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, operates Illinois' busiest Level 1 trauma center and treats roughly 120,000 emergency and trauma cases annually, according to Cook County Health.
Community organizations including the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council have partnered with Chicago's Community Safety Coordination Center to combine economic development, youth programs, and street infrastructure projects aimed at curbing drive-by violence, per a report from the Brookings Institution. Under Illinois law, a first-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory sentence of 20 to 60 years in prison, with an additional enhancement of 25 years to life if the offender personally discharged a firearm that caused the death, according to the McCall Law Offices, P.C. Separately, knowingly firing a gun toward an occupied vehicle is charged as aggravated discharge of a firearm, a Class 1 felony punishable by 4 to 15 years in prison, per the Abdallah Law firm. No arrests have been announced in connection with Friday's shooting.
