On Friday, October 13, the final three defendants from the 2022 Ventura County Fairgrounds burglary case were sentenced. The individuals involved in stealing more than $572,000 received prison sentences, while their lookout and driver received a jail term, as per a report from the Ventura County District Attorney.
Throughout the investigation, it was revealed that the group planned the burglary meticulously. They exploited an inside resource named Alexander Piceno, an employee of the cash receipts processing company for the fair. This inside information allowed them to gain access to the safe within the administration building. The crime took place during the annual Ventura County Fair on August 10, 2022. The guilty parties, including Rafael Morales, Jesus Rios, and Carlos Aranda, were arrested on March 2, 2023. Unfortunately, the stolen funds have not been recovered.
Technology played a pivotal role in the investigation of this crime. The California Highway Patrol used video surveillance footage and license plate reader data to identify the criminals, as revealed by Senior Deputy District Attorney Marc Leventhal.
