Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker extends his commitment to reproductive rights beyond his state with the establishment of Think Big America. This self-funded political organization aims to protect and promote abortion rights across the country according to Fox Illinois.
Think Big America has already assisted with constitutional amendments favoring abortion access in Ohio, Arizona, and Nevada. The Democratic governor, a multibillionaire, and philanthropist, is a known advocate for reproductive rights. This latest venture growths his political reach, sparking conjectures about presidential ambitions.
June 2022 saw the U.S. Supreme Court overturning the Roe v. Wade ruling, resulting in the surfacing of abortion rights debates. With fourteen states enacting abortion bans, the issue remains a hot topic in national discourse as reported by the Associated Press.
Pritzker, in a formal statement, echoed his consistent commitment to the cause. Noting his early exposure to the abortion-rights movement, he emphasized that Think Big America intends to protect the "fundamental right of reproductive choice for all, irrespective the state of residence, race, religion or economic status."
As a 501(c)(4) nonprofit, Think Big America, a dark money organization, is not legally required to reveal its donors. However, spokesperson Natalie Edelstein stated Pritzker is currently to solely fund, with "substantial" contributions that cover initial campaign support in other states. While no external donations have yet been sought, this could change in the future according to the Associated Press.
A three-person board manages Think Big America, comprising of Desiree Rogers, former White House social secretary under President Barack Obama, alongside state Rep. Margaret Croke and Alderwoman Michelle Harris, both from Chicago. As an advocate for progressive agendas, Pritzker is most vocal about abortion accessibility.
After his re-election, Pritzker further fortified abortion protections in Illinois. These laws allow patients from states with abortion restrictions or prohibitions to undergo the procedure in Illinois Fox Illinois reports.
Amidst vigorous participation on the national stage and criticism against GOP "zealots" advocating "culture wars," Pritzker has denied any ambitions for a larger political role. Yet, he affirms that Think Big America will "counter right-wing extremism on all fronts," beyond just the abortion rights issue.
Reflecting in the urgency to act, board member Desiree Rogers emphasized, "There was never a time more critical for everyone to actively participate in the fight for reproductive rights.. I am prepared to work ... to ensure the rights we enjoy in Illinois are a reality for all."
