Starting yesterday, the Illinois Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) began accepting applications from eligible households. LIHEAP provides financial assistance for utilities such as natural gas, propane, and electricity to income-qualifying families, as Fox Illinois reports.
First-round qualification to apply for LIHEAP include families with members over 60, Illinois inhabitants with certified disabilities, and/or children under 6. The initiative targets reducing the impact of soaring energy costs on susceptible demographics. Households outside the first-round criterion can apply on November 1st and December 1st. Applications are open till August 15, 2024, or until funds deplete according to Fox Illinois.
Responding to rising energy costs, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker issued a statement affirming the state's dedication to aid affected families. “As energy costs continue to rise, Illinois families deserve support to keep the lights on—and that’s exactly what my administration is doing,” Pritzker stated in a report by WTHI-TV.
Families applying for assistance, they can visit helpillinoisfamilies.com or consult their local agency. Phone assistance is also available by dialing 1-833-711-0374. Due to the limit of LIHEAP funds, early application is advised.
