Amid rising interfaith tensions after a Hamas attack in Israel, a man in Lombard, Illinois, has been arrested on two felony hate crime charges. He's accused of making shooting threats against two Muslim men on Tuesday, October 17, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Lombard resident Larry York, 46, purportedly queried a man parked outside the apartment complex. Becoming aggressive when the man responded, York made xenophobic remarks and demanded he leave the country. Subsequently confronting a second man, York is accused of making threats, physically intimidating him, and lifting a bench to knock down the first man. York is alleged to have claimed that four friends were coming to shoot the men, WGN-TV detailed.
Religious and community heads are working to restore peace, even as this incident exposes the difficulties in safeguarding susceptible communities from hate crimes. The stabbing death of 6-year-old Wadea al-Fayoume in Will County earlier this month has raised anxiety of potential attacks against Muslims and Jewish people in the area.
Post incident, Lombard police acted promptly, arresting York at a bar on the following day with minimal disturbance. The Council on American-Islamic Relations' Chicago chapter thanked law enforcement for their swift handling of the situation while expressing concerns about a reported increase in hate incidents. Ahmed Rehab, the CAIR executive director, said that the organization is experiencing an influx of discrimination reports not seen since post 9/11, according to Chicago Tribune.
In light of heightened concern, the principal of the Aqsa All-Girl Muslim School in Bridgeview disclosed about a threatening hate letter received. The principal informed parents that students would be working remotely the following day. The specifics of the threat engaged is yet to be revealed, contributing to the uneasiness experienced by local Muslim communities.
