The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) is addressing the national dog population crisis by waiving adoption fees for a diverse range of older, less adopted animals that include dogs, rabbits, rodents, and birds to name a few.
In an effort to place these animals in caring homes, the MSPCA is hosting an adoptathon event from October 20th to 22nd. The fees waved off range between $15 to $500 for the potential adopters, as reported by WWLP. Though the organization has rehoused hundreds of dogs over the summer, the dog population issue still persists.
Mike Keiley, MSPCA Director of Adoption Centers and Programs, reflected on the ongoing crisis. "This summer, our goal was helping as many dogs as we could. We found homes for multitudes, but the crisis far from abated," stated Keiley during an interview with Boston 25 News.
The MSPCA's centers in Boston, Methuen, Salem, and Centerville are open for prospective pet owners to adopt these animals. The waived adoption fees not only find these animals loving homes, but they also free up capacity for other needy animals seeking shelter at the MSPCA facilities.
The MSPCA's resources have been stretched due to a rise in surrendered animals, including a batch of around 50 mice put up for adoption. Besides dogs, the organization is focusing on animals of other species to alleviate the crisis as per the report on WWLP.
With these efforts, the MSPCA urges the public to consider adopting not just popular pets but animals that aren't traditionally the first choice for many, but are equally deserving of love and care. This adoptathon event and waived fees not only provide caring homes for these neglected animals but also provide a rewarding pet ownership experience to the adopters.
