On Saturday, November 4, a collaborative effort between the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, San Diego County District Attorney's Office, and the Carlsbad Police Department will present a gun safety event in Encinitas. They're inviting community members to surrender any unwanted firearms in return for gift cards.

The press release from the Sheriff's Department discloses that participants will be given $100 for handguns, rifles, and shotguns, and $200 for assault weapons and unregistered "ghost" guns.

The event will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Encinitas City Hall and aims at lessening the number of functioning guns in circulation, thus promoting a safer community. They ensure anonymity for participants and a straightforward exchange process without questions. All collected firearms will eventually be destroyed.

In conjunction with the buyback program, free gun cable locks and security boxes are also being offered at the event for those who wish to securely store firearms they retain.
