Under six weeks until former Chicago Ald. Ed Burke's corruption trial, there is chatter about court strategy and secret recordings. Interestingly, there's been no reference to former President Donald Trump. As the trial nears, all involved adapt their tactics.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, jurors will hear recordings of Burke allegedly discussing his work for the Trump Organization. However, all mentions of the former president will be omitted, as requested by the defense. Burke stands accused of misconduct involving property tax schemes and employment favors, as reported by the NBC Chicago.

Burke's defense argued that because of Trump's criminal indictment and polarization, any mention of his International Hotel & Tower should not be allowed in court. Judge Virginia Kendall, during a pre-trial hearing, indicated the prosecution agreed to mute references to Trump in the recordings.

With the trial close at hand, these recordings make an already-complex case even more so. In defense of Burke, his legal team asserts that his actions need to be considered within the scope of his duties. They argue reading too much into specific transactions could be misleading. Burke's interactions with former Ald. Danny Solis, who is also part of corruption investigations, support their claim, as per NBC Chicago.

As the trial begins, there is a growing awareness of the relationships within Chicago's political landscape. Burke, in his 54 years on the Chicago City Council, oversaw considerable real estate interests and developed intricate alliances. These alliances, often hidden from public view, now become central as Burke stands trial alongside his political aide Peter Andrews and developer Charles Cui.

The trial begins on November 6th.
