A security guard was critically injured in a shooting yesterday at the Red Line station in the 0-100 block of West 79th Street Chatham on Chicago's South Side. The incident reportedly began as a physical confrontation and escalated to a shooting according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The unidentified victim was an involved in the altercation, prompting the assailant to fire a gun. Following the incident, the security guard had been to the University of Chicago Medical Center transported with a gunshot wound to his neck, in a critical condition as reported by ABC7 Chicago.
Chicago police were quick to arrive on scene, arresting a suspect shortly after the incident, and only a few blocks away. In possession of the suspect, a handgun was recovered according to a Chicago Sun-Times report. Information about the suspect's identity is not yet released as charges are pending.
Both police and the CTA have not been able to confirming the employment status of the injured guard as indicated by the Chicago Sun-Times. The incident has stirred citywide concern, leaving residents questioning the reasons and circumstances which led to the tragic event, that has resulted in the victim battling to recover from serious injury.
