As the Israel-Hamas war enters its second week, a solidarity rally held in Skokie, Illinois, for Israel has ignited confrontations between rally participants and protestors. The altercations, which took place near the northern suburbs of Skokie and Lincolnwood yesterday, highlight U.S. and global divisions regarding the conflict, increasing concerns about escalating tensions.
A gunshot was fired into the air on Sunday evening during the rally, and several people, including a police officer, were pepper-sprayed within the presence of the pro-Palestinian group outside a Jewish organization's rally. The event was held by the Midwest Regional Office of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, originally planned as a fundraising dinner. Amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, however, the gathering morphed into a public show of support for Israel, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Approximately 600 people attended the Solidarity with Israel event at Ateres Ayala, 3412 W. Touhy, Skokie. Local rabbis, businessmen, and politicians voiced their support for Israel's right to defend itself. During the event, Yinam Cohen, General Consul of Israel to the Midwest, clarified, "We are fighting Hamas, not the Palestinian people." State Sen. Laura Fine echoed this sentiment, stating that "In our darkest times, the strength and support of our community reminds us we're not alone," as reported by the Chicago Tribune.
Meanwhile, nearly 200 supporters of the pro-Palestinian group gathered to intersperse the Israeli solidarity rally. Led by U.S. Palestine Community Network Chair Hatem Abudayyeh, the group sought to "end their complicity and support of Israel." The demonstration resulted in various disturbances and escalated tensions, culminating in an incident where an individual fired a gunshot into the air when surrounded by a group at the Lincolnwood Town Center mall, as detailed by the Chicago Sun-Times.
Protestors attending the pro-Palestinian demonstration alleged receiving threats commanding them to move south across Touhy Avenue, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
In a separate incident, a Chicago police officer and two others sustained minor injuries when an individual sprayed pepper spray into the crowd, leading to the arrest of one person and the detention of another for further investigation, per the Chicago Tribune.
