Yesterday evening, an Illinois State Police Trooper engaged in a shooting with 37-year-old Cristobal Santana on the 1600 block of Toronto Road, Springfield, according to the Illinois State Police. The Trooper, whose identity is undisclosed, sustained a leg wound.
Reportedly, Santana had been suspected of involvement in a recent homicide in Chicago. After the gunfight, the suspect fled the scene, leaving his vehicle behind, but was arrested at 1:58 a.m. by state authorities. after several hours of intensive search.
The area surrounding Toronto Road, in between Cotton Hill Road and Horseview Drive, was sectioned off during the incident, impacting local residents and traffic. At the time of publishing the notice, the road closures are still in effect for an indeterminate period, and drivers have been advised to find alternative routes.
The investigation into the shooting is currently underway by the Illinois State Police, who have declined to offer additional details at this early stage. As the situation evolves, updates will be released by the ISP.
