Thousands took to the streets of Boston in support of Palestinians caught amidst the conflict between Hamas and Israel. The protestors, originating at Copley Square, echoed their concerns for families in Gaza facing a humanitarian crisis, and pushed for international intervention. Participants were deeply affected by the size and energy of the demonstration, according to CBS News.
Chants of "long live Palestine" and "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free," filled the air. Despite some fearing repercussions, many spoke up against the hardships Palestinians face, reported WBUR News. The rally, organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation's Boston branch and the Boston South Asian Coalition, sought to stimulate collective action addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The escalating conflict results in casualties on both sides. Reports suggest that the death toll comprises approximately 1,400 Israelis and nearly 2,400 Palestinians. The United Nations warns of a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza due to shortages of food, water, fuel, and medical supplies, and border blockades, CBS News reported.
Protesters in Boston not only called for a cease-fire but also vigorously demanded a halt to U.S. aid to Israel. They believe this funding contributes to Gaza's humanitarian crisis. Large crowds occupied Dartmouth Street, powerfully chanting "free Palestine" and similar slogans NBC Boston reported.
Dr. Anwar Mhajne, a political scientist, underlined the difficulties faced by Gaza's 2.3 million residents struggling to access water, electricity, and food. Mhajne noted that many Palestinians are wary of leaving Gaza for fear of not returning, a sentiment rooted in historical events that displaced them, according to NBC Boston.
With about 600,000 Palestinians having evacuated, northern Gaza by Israeli order and the Rafah crossing into Egypt closed, many at the rally pushed for amplified international intervention to protect innocent lives. The march served as an impactful platform for the protestors in Boston to express their views and urge the broader international community to help alleviate the suffering of Palestinians swiftly and contribute to a meaningful resolution of the conflict.
