Chicago faced a tragic weekend with seven deaths due to gunfire, including a 12-year-old boy, Damien Green, as reported by WTTW. Police discovered the body of Green with a fatal gunshot wound to the head in Englewood.
Details are emerging on the level of violence during the weekend. There were a total of 23 people shot in 22 separate incidences, with four fatalities in addition to Green.
On Saturday, a 29-year-old man was fatally shot on South Mozart Street. Later the same day, a 42-year-old man died due to gunfire on South Dorchester Avenue, and a 43-year-old man was killed in a parking lot on West Ogden Avenue. On Sunday evening, a 35-year-old man was ambushed in a parked car and shot in the neck on West 71st Street, later dying at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
To address the recent surge in gun violence, Chicago Police Department (CPD) and local residents are exploring solutions. CPD's Deputy Chief Gilberto Calderon called Damien Green's death a "tragedy" and asked the community for their assistance with investigations. He said, "We need the community to come out and help us ... We have young kids like this not given the opportunity to become great men in our city."
