Dublin is bracing itself for significant changes to its urban landscape as it gears up for the installation of the Iron Horse Trail Bridge Overcrossing. The city announced that Dublin Boulevard will be fully closed from Dougherty Road to Hacienda Drive on October 21, and again on November 4, to facilitate this major project according to the city's announcement.
A $14 million project, the purpose of to provide a safer crossing for pedestrians and cyclists who use the Iron Horse Regional Trail. Established in 1986, this regional trail follows the former Southern Pacific Railroad right-of-way, connecting multiple communities and enhancing public transportation options via the City of Dublin.
Trail users formerly had to navigate Dublin Boulevard's busy lanes before rejoining the trail. With the new bridge overcrossing, however, users will be able to cross several lanes of automobile traffic directly without leaving the trail according to the city's update.
The project, initially slated for completion in early September, was delayed as the contractor was unable to assemble the final bridge components for lifting into place per the city's announcement.
A recent Hoodline report highlighted traffic delays experienced by motorists due to the construction and recommends seeking alternate routes during peak hours to avoid congestion in the area as reported by Hoodline.
Other similar initiatives in the region are also focused on improving pedestrian and cyclist mobility like the Bollinger Canyon Road project in San Ramon. All these projects aim for safer, separated crossings to improve traffic flow and the safety of those utilizing the trails as Hoodline highlights.
The City of Dublin is working with Goodfellow Bros. Sequoia A JV for the construction, which is funded by Alameda County Measure BB, BART Measure RR, and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District Transportation Fund for Clean Air. This project is viewed as an investment towards better pedestrian and cyclist mobility and environmental sustainability according to the city's information.
