Yesterday, a 23-year-old woman was injured in a hit-and-run accident in the Loop area of downtown Chicago on DuSable Lake Shore Drive. She was struck by a silver 2019 GMC pickup truck during rush hour while crossing an intersection near Buckingham Fountain before 5:30 p.m. The woman's identity is yet to be released to the public, according to Chicago Sun Times.
Chicago police reports indicated that the woman was struck by the truck when it ran a red light on the 500 block of South DuSable Lake Shore Drive, the driver being identified as an adult male. The driver stopped only momentarily before fleeing the scene, heading north on DuSable Lake Shore Drive. Eyewitness Danny Rockett gave his account to ABC7 Chicago, explaining, "She was just trying to cross the street. She had the right of way completely. This guy in a giant gray truck just wasn't stopping for anything, and he came barreling down the other side of the street."
Initially, police had reported the woman as deceased, but later updates mention she was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and her condition was updated to fair. The Chicago Police Department's Major Accidents Unit is working on the ongoing investigation of the case, as per Chicago Sun Times.
Following the incident, the visibly shaken Lake Shore Drive intersection, had several distraught witnesses. Describing the driver's apparent indifference, Rockett stated, "He wasn't looking at his phone. He was just looking straight forward, just going and not stopping for anything. He drove away pretty quickly. He knew what he did. He stopped momentarily, and then kept going," details ABC7 Chicago.
