In a daring early morning confrontation, gunfire erupted at a Bedford Park gas station, leaving a veteran officer with serious injuries, officials said Sunday. In the wake of the chaotic scene, two suspects are behind bars facing severe charges, according to Bedford Park authorities, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.
The accused, Raul Perez, 24, with roots in Blue Island, is staring down the barrel of several charges, including attempted first-degree murder of a police officer and armed habitual criminal. His alleged accomplice, Luis Gonzalez, 22, of Chicago, is slapped with a count of attempted aggravated vehicular hijacking. These two men, reported to have been fleeing the wreckage of a stolen car, had their plans cut short when a confrontational brush with the law ignited at approximately 3:40 a.m. at a gas station located in the 6800 block of South Archer Road.
The injured officer, a member of the Bedford Park Police Department with a service record spanning over 15 years, sustained multiple bullet wounds and underwent emergency surgery. Now fighting through recovery, he clings to the sidelines of life in the ICU. With resolve, though, the officer is expected to bounce back fully, according to CBS News. The calamity followed on the heels of a reported car crash where a stolen gray BMW met its end against a dumpster. This vehicle, police disclosed, had been taken in a recent carjacking originating in Chicago.
Cook County court records, obtained by journalists, show that both suspects were ordered to be detained pending their trial, with a court date looming on the horizon, set for December 5.
