A recent incident in Boston has highlighted the dangers of drunk driving, reminding the community of the dire results it can bring. A local man reportedly struck a woman with his car while under the influence of alcohol, as reported in a press release issued by the Suffolk District Attorney's Office.
The incident occurred during the early hours of Saturday, October 31. Responding to a call from the intersection of O Street and East Fourth Street in South Boston, officers discovered a woman lying in the road. She was reported to have been struck by an SUV while in the crosswalk. The victim's husband, who was behind her, estimated the vehicle's speed at 25 to 30 miles per hour at the incident's time. She sustained heavy injuries, to quickly run through them: fractured ribs, internal bleeding, multiple facial lacerations, and a concussion.
Officers found the driver, 46-year-old Jeffrey McArdle, showing clear signs of intoxication - including uncertain balance, glassy eyes, and slurred speech. McArdle, subsequently failed a field sobriety test which led to his arrest by the authorities. He also refused to take a Breathalyzer test during his booking process - he faces charges of operating under the influence and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.
