Former Transit Police officer, Sgt. Michael Adamson, has been assigned to three months of pre-trial probation by a Boston Municipal Court Judge. As part of his probation, he is required to pay $600 restitution to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), as confirmed by a press release from the Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General. Sgt. Adamson, amongst two other Transit Police officers, was charged with larceny over $250 after authorities examined the officers' pay scales.
Per the Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Transit Police Department (TPD), the officers were found to be violating their work hours by leaving shifts early or failing to come completely, despite receiving full pay. The investigation was initiated when a TPD cruiser was found parked overnight in a Winthrop residential area. Further analysis of Sgt. Adamson's cruiser GPS data revealed his absence during his shifts 15 times between October 25, 2017, and February 14, 2018. This misconduct resulted in a total amount of $1,228.36 of unworked hours. However, his restitution is set at $600.
Two more officers were implicated in this case: former TPD lieutenant Sgt. Kenneth Berg and former TPD sergeant Jason Morris. Both were put on pre-trial probation in December 2021. They were ordered to pay back $8,460.97 and $4,354.55 respectively to the MBTA, according to the press release. Total restitution from all three officers totaled up to $13,415.52, which is being recovered by the MBTA.
