On November 2nd, an interfaith group in Boston, consisting of many different religious backgrounds, held a protest for a cessation of hostilities in the Israel-Hamas conflict. The rally, organized by the Interfaith Coalition of Boston, saw hundreds of supporters advocating for a ceasefire and the prevention of loss of life according to NBC Boston.
The procession began at Boston Common and concluded at the John F. Kennedy Federal Building, which houses the offices of Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey. The plan was to stage a pray-in outside these offices, urging the senators' public support for a ceasefire Boston 25 News reports.
Despite US President Joe Biden's call to temporarily halt hostilities on October 7th, Israel claimed that a ceasefire would only benefit Hamas. Concurrently, the conflict has led to the death of thousands, displaced more than a million, and is culminating in a major humanitarian crisis in Gaza NBC Boston detailed.
During the rally, attendees engaged in cascading stories, participated in religious rituals, and sang songs, highlighting the tragic loss of lives in the conflict. The demonstration took an unexpected turn when 23 protesters instigated a sit-in inside the Federal Building and were subsequently arrested for "not complying to signs and directions," as recorded by Boston 25 News.
In response to the sit-in, Reverend Darrell Hamilton II, of the First Baptist Church in Jamaica Plain stated, "We demand a ceasefire now to halt the brutal actions by the Israeli government against Gaza and the West Bank". Both Senators Warren and Markey have been pushing for humanitarian aid in Gaza; however, their response to the protester's demands for a public ceasefire endorsement remains uncertain reports Boston 25 News.
