In the past fortnight, at least eight businesses experienced burglaries with numerous locally-owned streetwear shops on Wicker Park's Milwaukee Avenue shopping strip being targeted, according to Block Club Chicago. To rapidly enter the stores, suspects in masks are using vehicles to crash into the security gates, subsequently stealing merchandise and fleeing the scene.
Demonstrating the criminals' technological know-how, stolen Jeep Grand Cherokees have been uniquely used in several incidents. Viral TikTok videos seemingly aid in breaking into these vehicles, as covered in Block Club Chicago. One store owner's losses from damages and stolen goods are estimated to be roughly $1 million.
To deter future attacks, Ald. Daniel La Spata proposed a temporary measure of installing Jersey walls (concrete barriers) outside vulnerable stores in association with Chicago's Department of Transportation. This stopgap measure may offer momentary relief but isn't a sustainable solution. Business owners in areas like Wicker Park and West Town remain extremely vigilant, with some resorting to parking their own vehicles as a barricade outside their stores. They continue to seek assistance from authorities for a lasting solution to these relentless crimes.
