A 42-year-old Walkerton woman was pronounced dead at the scene Saturday evening after the Chevrolet she was driving left State Road 104 in rural La Porte County and struck a tree. Irene J. Pantle was identified as the victim of the single-vehicle crash, which happened in the 7000 East block of the highway.
According to the La Porte County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched to the scene at approximately 6:58 p.m. Central time on Saturday after reports of the crash came in. Investigators say Pantle had been driving a blue 2017 Chevrolet passenger vehicle eastbound on State Road 104 when it left the roadway and collided with a tree. She was pronounced deceased at the scene, and the sheriff's office says the reason the vehicle left the roadway remains unknown.
Pantle lived in Walkerton, a rural town near the border of La Porte and St. Joseph counties that sits at the eastern terminus of State Road 104, according to background compiled from Wikipedia. The roadway itself is a 9.52-mile, two-lane rural state highway that connects State Road 4 near La Porte to U.S. Route 6 in Walkerton, running mostly through farmland in the two counties.
A Wide Response From Local Agencies
The sheriff's office reported that a broad roster of personnel responded to the scene and assisted with the investigation. Deputy Alex Clemons and assisting deputies completed the initial on-scene investigation, while Detective Joe Walker, Deputy Jet Balenia, Sergeant Keith Wilson, and Deputy Daniel Diaz also assisted. Deputy Xavier Biggerstaff, who assisted with this crash investigation as well, previously led a six-township foot pursuit in La Porte County last month.
La Porte County EMS, the Lincoln Township Volunteer Fire Department, the La Porte County Coroner's Office, and John's Garage all assisted at the scene as well, per the sheriff's office. The agency said toxicology test results are still pending and that no further information has been released.
Standard Testing Under State Law
Under Indiana Code 9-30-7-3, the state's implied consent law requires law enforcement officers to offer chemical testing to any driver involved in a crash resulting in serious bodily injury or death, according to BillTrack50. Saturday's crash also fell within Indiana's 2026 Labor Day weekend high-visibility traffic enforcement campaign, which runs through Monday, September 7, and involves extra patrols from state and local agencies aimed at curbing impaired and aggressive driving, as reported by the Daily Journal. The push is part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” initiative. During last year's Labor Day weekend, Indiana recorded 86 traffic crashes involving alcohol or drugs statewide, resulting in 29 injuries and two fatalities, according to WISH-TV. Preliminary 2025 federal crash data cited by state officials found that nearly 23% of Indiana's fatal traffic crashes involved alcohol impairment, while more than 41% involved drug impairment.
County's Broader Traffic Safety Record
The La Porte County Sheriff's Office maintains a specialized Fatal Alcohol Crash Team, formed in 2012, that conducts multi-agency accident reconstructions when vehicular impairment is suspected in fatal crashes. It was not stated whether that team was activated for Saturday's investigation. Annual traffic fatality data analyzed by the Indiana University Public Policy Institute previously showed La Porte County reaching a five-year high of 27 roadway deaths in a single year, according to the NWI Times.
No further details have been released about what caused Pantle's Chevrolet to leave the roadway, and the sheriff's office has not indicated when toxicology results are expected. The crash is at least the second serious roadway incident investigated by La Porte County deputies in recent days, following a pedestrian struck near Stonehedge Way that closed a stretch of US 35 earlier this week.
