On Tuesday, carjackers targeted drivers in three separate incidents on Chicago's North Side. The circumstances of these events pointed towards a coordinated carjacking spree, all occurring within approximately half an hour, causing rising concerns about community safety.
ABC7 Chicago's report mentioned that the first theft took place at about 11:10 p.m. on North Lincoln Avenue. In this incident, a silver and black sedan boxed in a male driver, who was on his left with no other option for escape. Then, four to six people got out of the car, brandished handguns, and forced the driver out of his car. Two of them took the car quickly and disappeared from the scene, leaving the man alone and vehicle-less.
Twenty minutes after the first incident, a similar crime played out on West Grace Street in Lakeview. According to ABC7 Chicago, a man, 29, was surrounded by two cars. A group of people brandished guns at him and took his vehicle. Unlike the violent action, physical harm was, thankfully, not inflicted on the victim.
For the third incident of the night, it was a female aged 25 who faced the traumatic situation, this time near Wrigley Field on North Clark Street. Information provided via the Chicago Police Department's website detailed that a couple of vehicles pinned her while she was parking her vehicle. Several armed men emerged and demanded that she exit her car. A second female in the car also fell victim to the assailants; she was battered and robbed, though she is predicted to recover soon.
Detectives from the Chicago Police Department's Area Three are meticulously conducting investigations and searching for unidentified criminals. Although formal correlations are yet to have been established linking the three carjackings, the patterns were glaringly similar, implying a coordinated operation that requires urgent attention.
