A new carjacking strategy surfaced on the streets of Chicago's North Side areas on the 16th, as shown in surveillance footage. A series of armed carjackings using an elaborate method of boxing in victims' vehicles was noted, enabling the culprits to quickly force out the drivers and take their cars. With criminals still on the loose, the city's residents remain vigilant against this unnerving criminal trend.
Frighteningly efficient, the carjackers conducted eight incidents within a few hours, affecting areas like Lakeview, Wrigleyville, and Lincoln Square. As per reports from NBC Chicago, carjackings took place by boxing in both parked and moving vehicles. The culprits swiftly ushered out the victims from their cars and stole them with enhanced ease. To make matters worse, the Chicago police have linked these carjackings and subsequent thefts to a larger crime wave, including two city burglaries at Ulta beauty stores.
Footage near Wrigley Field discloses a daunting scene where masked assailants forcefully extract a woman from her vehicle while simultaneously robbing and assaulting her female passenger on the sidewalk. Proximity-wise, another severe carjacking event was reported about two miles north in Lincoln Square, showcasing the random selection of locations for these brutal activities.
Business entities, like Merkle's Bar and Grill near the site of one carjacking, find themselves faced with the realities of increased security needs. Co-owner Russell Bishop explained that they have instituted extra precautions, such as hiring two doormen and an inside staff member, to prioritize the safety of their customers.
In response to these unsettling events, Chicago residents are making significant changes to their lifestyles. The newfound sense of vulnerability leads them to adjust defensive habits out of necessity. According to ABC7 Chicago, residents are altering their driving habits to avoid getting boxed in, while some are opting for alternating modes of transportation as a precautionary step.
